(CNSNews.com) - The Northern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is battling to prevent a school in Rocklin, Calif. from displaying the phrase, 'God Bless America.' The group argues that any demonstration of patriotism in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks should be secularized.
The American Center for Law and Justice, however, is pledging to defend "any school district or student organization in America that desires to display 'God Bless America' in schools," the public interest law firm stated.
"At a time when America desires to exhibit patriotism, the ACLU sees fit to undermine the Constitution by attempting to exert a heavy hand of censorship," said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the ACLJ, said.
"The ACLU is out of step with the law and is reacting in a manner that is totally absurd and irresponsible. The message 'God Bless America' is constitutionally protected speech and the ACLU's legal analysis is both skewed and very troubling," Sekulow said.
Stuart J. Roth, senior trial counsel for the ACLJ, said the First Amendment to the United States Constitution gives schools and students the right to use the phrase 'God Bless America.'
"It is fully protected free speech. It invokes no Establishment Clause violation, as doesn't the phrase 'In God We Trust' on the currency and neither does the acknowledgement of God in our Declaration of Independence and Constitution," he said.
"The fact that this is being made an issue by the ACLU is intellectually dishonest because our country has a long-standing history of invoking the name of God in founding documents and throughout our history," Roth said.
Breen Elementary School in Rocklin, CA is the school the ACLU singled out for using 'God Bless America' on a marquee outside the school.
The ACLU sent letters to Breen Elementary, demanding that the school remove the phrase, Roth said.
"The school is going to stick to their guns and if the ACLU wants to file the lawsuit, I have told the school board attorney for the Rocklin school district that the [ACLJ] would gladly step in and defend the school district."
Letter to Breen Elementary School in Rocklin, CA from the ACLU
The ACLU amazingly called the "God Bless America" signs "a hurtful, divisive
message" that is in "violation" of the Constitution, and demanded
the sign "be replaced immediately." You can read the ACLU letter to

PRO ABORTION COURT
In Hill v. Colorado, the First Amendment rights of pro-life protesters was silenced. The Supreme Court choose to relegate First Amendment speech to the same category as pornography. Pro-life citizens must now squarely face a shocking reality: the current United States Supreme Court is a pro-abortion institution that can be counted upon the actively promote abortion. Not only has the court upheld infanticide, it continues to silence those who wish to speak out against it!

DEFEND STUDENTS
The ACLU have pledged to stifle student rights. Five members of the Supreme Court truly believe that a prayer by a student at a high school football game amounts to a constitutional crisis. Sadly, hostility toward religion has become the prevailing legal sentiment in our nation today. Credit the ACLU for this sad occurence.

DEFEND PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF FAITH
The ACLU and others have unleashed an all-out assault on public displays of faith such as the Ten Commandments. We simply cannot allow the anti-faith activists to strip every last vestige of our religious heritage from our public life.

ACLU Combats 'Missionary' Discounts
SALT LAKE CITY - The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah is challenging a common practice in Utah wherein restaurant owners give discounts to Mormon missionaries. The ACLU has sent letters to the state attorney general's office and the state Restaurants Association advising that the practice of offering the missionary discounts at local eateries and retail businesses violates Utah's non-discrimination law. "Conferring a discount on the basis of religion is clearly illegal discrimination under the law", said ACLU staff attorney Janelle Eurick. "The practice ostracizes the religious minority in Utah and perpetuates feelings that non-Mormons are not as welcome in our communities or business establishments". Most non-Mormons in the state would probably have no problem with the discount, just as most Americans have no problem with discounts for senior citizens' discounts that "discriminate" against those under 55 years old. Orem resident Judy Bruyette contacted the ACLU after a priest and deacon of her church accompanied her to a restaurant, but were told that only Latter Day Saints missionaries and their families were offered discounts. "This is just like offering a 15-percent discount for whites in the South. Just because they are the majority does not mean that a business can discriminate against the minority community", said Ms. Bruyette.

A Small Victory

DENVER - The families of two students slain in the Columbine High School massacre two years ago are finally allowed to mount their hand-painted religious tiles in a memorial at the school.
After the April 20, 1999, shooting in which 13 people died, the suburban Denver high school invited students, teachers, parents and others to paint the tiles to promote healing. The tiles were mounted in a memorial at the school.
"I didn't feel that I did anything that was not my constitutional right to paint," said Sue Petrone, Rohrbough's mother. She painted a tile with a heart, a cross and her son's name.
The school's attorney said Daniel's anti-censorship ruling would probably be appealed.
Comment: Do not be surprised if the ACLU steps in to help...
