Working with Columns

Column Tip One.

Did you ever have to go hunting for something in a folder
that has hundreds - literally - of files in it? Well, you usually
know something about that file since you are hunting it down,
and if you know the name, you are all set. Or perhaps you do not
recall the name of the folder, but you do know you created it in the
last day or so, or you know what type of file it is, but do not
remember the name...gosh, it's confusing already! Or, let us suppose
you have a lot of text files scattered on your computer and you decide
it would be very helpful to have them all in a separate folder.
This could take some serious time if they are not all together.
This tip can help you by sorting your columns. If you click the top
of any column in Windows Explorer, it will list the contents of that
folder in the order based on that column. For example, if you click
the "Modified" column, you will find it lists the files in the folder based
on the last date they were modified. It will sort the A to Z the first
time you click, then Z to A the next click. This trick also works with
other programs. For example, if you click the column headings in
Outlook Express, you can sort your e-mail by the column heading
(i.e. subject, date received, etc). This is a great little trick to help
sort your e-mail.

Column SIzes

In Windows Explorer, you can resize the columns. You just grab
the black column separators at the top and drag them to the size
you desire/need. There is however, a better way to do this.
There is a little space located between columns, you will find if you
double-click that space, the column automatically resizes and will show the
complete name of every item in the column. This trick should work
with most programs that use columns of information such as Outlook,
Excell, etc.
