Pop Up Ads and Cookies

Ways to deal with annoying pop-up ads

Do those pop-ups turning up all over the Internet get on your
nerves? They do mine! Some pop-ups will even pop open
another pop-up ad when you close them!

One way to deal with pop-ups is to hit your ESCAPE key (upper
left side of the keyboard) as soon as you see one open. In most
cases, that will stop it from loading and will prevent any more pop-up
windows opening from it. After you hit the ESCAPE key, close the
pop-up window.

Another thing you can do is hit ALT-4 as soon as you see the new
window. That should close it as well as closing the window for you.

If these methods do not appeal to you, there is software available
on the Internet, many of them free, that will automatically get rid
of most pop-up windows. You could try http://www.zd.net.com
or http://www.hotfiles.com and type "pop up killer" into the search
box. There is one available called "Pop UP Killer", another called
"AnalogXPOW". Those are the two I have heard of most frequently
but there may be others. Read over the descriptions and see which
one you feel would serve you best.

Cookies

You can delete the cookies on your computer any time you wish
that much room on your hard drive. If you have 1500 cookies on
your computer, that would only take up approximately 5 megs of
disk space. That's not much at all. Also note, cookies truly do
more good than harm. Web sites you use on a regular basis
"remember" you with cookies. They keep passwords, names, etc.
If you have web sites that you visit frequently and wish to keep
your cookies activated, but do not wish cookies to remain on
your machine from other web sites, you can only delete the ones
you do not want.

There are two ways you can do this. You can go to "My Computer,
click to open, click on your "C" drive, click on your windows file
folder and in this window, you will see another folder labeled "cookies".
Chances are there will be a lot of those little buggers! It can be time
consuming to manually to through them all to find the one's you wish
to keep. If you plan on doing things this way, you may wish to go
into your cookies file at least once a week to stay on top of them.
All you need to do to delete a cookie is highlight it by placing your
cursor over it, right-click on your mouse, select delete. It's gone!
If you would like to delete all your cookies, click on "edit", then
"select all". This will highlight all the cookies. Next, click on
"file", then delete -they should all disappear!
If you manually go through this process, after you are done, go
into your recycle bin, click on "file", the top option should be
"Empty Recycle Bin". Highlight this and the cookies are off your
system for good!

Now, for the second method. First, this will cover deleting all
of your cookies, then just some of them.

1. Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Start button, Explore.
2. Next, open your Temporary Internet Files folder. It should be
just a few folders down.
3. Now, look at the top of the right pane where all your temporary
internet files are. At the top there should be a column labeled Type
(along with Name, Internet Address, etc). Click the word "Type".
If you do not see the list on top, click "View" and then "details".
That should bring up the screen we are looking for. This sorts your
files so that all your cookies are lumped together.
4. Now, scroll down until you come to your cookie files. They're easy
to spot since they have the word "cookie" in their titles. They should
have a little text icon next to them as well. Now you can select those
you wish to delete and follow the above procedure. You can highlight
several at one time if you wish, Just hold down on your "CONTROL"
key and highlight the one's you wish to delete. When you are done,
simply go into file as above, and select delete.

If you wish, you can also set your computer so you will get a prompt
whenever a web site is attempting to place a cookie on your machine.
You can also choose the option of accepting absolutely NO cookies,
but I wouldn't recommend this if you shop online, use forums on a
regular basis or any web site where you use a password. Some web
sites allow you to customize the page you see when you log on;
without cookies, this option will not work. Think of the cookie as the
way the site recognizes you when you enter it.
Onto the procedure.

For Internet Explorer 5.0+:
Click on your "Tools" menu, then Internet Options. Click your
Security Tab, then choose the "Custom Level" button. You will
find an option for either disabling cookies or having your computer
prompt you before accepting them.

With Netscape
Go to your "Edit" menu, then preferences. On the screen that comes
up, go to the "Advanced" menu, then "cookies". You will see an
option for disabling or prompting you. Select your choice.
You're all set! This prompt is a good way to go, however, keep in
mind you will most likely be prompted quite a bit while on the Internet.
Some find this annoying, some feel it is well worth it. Do what you are
most comfortable with!
